Four Points by Sheraton Auckland

Four Points by Sheraton Auckland

Overview:

On my quick two day stopover in Auckland, I needed a reasonable hotel for the night. There were plenty of options to chose from and Auckland features many boutique hotels which always offer a unique experience. While I was intrigued, the cost was a bit much for just the short night and wasn’t able to take advantage of all the amenities these hotels offer.

I went back to my trusty Marriott brand and found a great rate and option at Four Points by Sheraton Auckland.

While it’s not one of the premier Marriott brands, it’s one of the first “budget” hotels which sometimes fits the bill when traveling.

Booking:

As you’re seeing, I’m a Marriott brand fan and have found their properties to work well for me on my trips. Booking is very easy with them and I’ve found a lot of flexibility in using their points.

My Monday night stay earned me a total of 1,543 points. This included a cheap base rate of   164 NZD or $106 USD for a “Superior City Room, 1 King, High Floor” room. According to TPG valuations, one Marriott point is 0.8 cents. I earned a total of just over $12 in rewards on this stay.

Location:

The hotel is located 25 minutes away from Auckland International Airport. The hotel does not offer a shuttle but taxi will cost approximately 75 NZD ($49 USD) or 18 NZD ($12 USD) on the bus which will take almost one hour.

If you have a rental car, there is an offsite parking garage which is a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel for 25 NZD/day ($16 USD) or on-site valet for 50 NZD/day ($33 USD).

The Four Points Sheraton at Auckland is located just outside the heart of the downtown Auckland. While it is nearby to the Art district, it is a 10 minute walk to the waterfront area. There are also plenty of great local food options around the hotel.

As you can see, the view from the room overlooks the downtown area with great views of the Sky Tower.

Check In:

After finding the hotel, you can drive into their small driveway to drop your bags and valet. If not you can drop your bags then head to the offsite parking garage.

Front desk staff were friendly and got me checked in with ease.

Hotel Lobby

Elevators are located just next to the check in desk and you have to use your key over the key reader under the buttons to access your floor. My room was on the 17th floor.

The Room:

Upon entering, I was shocked at how tiny the room was even for being on the 17th floor. Then it hit me, I was being a snob after staying at JW Marriott’s and Westin’s. The room was overall actually spacious with the view and bathroom opening things up.

There was a large king bed with a decorative headboard. The bed was comfortable with clean linens. Pillow selection also good for both firm or soft pillow lovers.

Bed and View

The desk area was well organized and neat. Closet included a robe, ironing board with iron, hangers, safe, and disposable slippers.

TV and Desk

The bathroom was roomy with a modern feel. Hot water was responsive in the shower and sink. The shower had great water pressure, something I think is overlooked in many hotels. Towels were plentiful and clean.

Bathroom

The sink area had enough space and outlets to hold all your toiletries (at least for one person.)

Complimentary Soaps

The mini fridge was lightly stocked and I couldn’t find a pricing menu for the items inside.

Amenities:

The on-site amenities were just enough for the smaller hotel. There is a continental or buffet breakfast available in the lobby for 25 NZD (16 USD) and 34 NZD (22 NZD) respectively.

Additional dining options include the Queen’s Head Bar & Eatery on the main floor which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also the brand new Roof Top Bar & Terrace which is on the 20th floor and open for dinner.

In Room Concierge

There is a fitness center and concierge for you fitness needs or additional travel planning needs. The staff was very friendly and welcoming.

Overall:

The Four Points by Sheraton Auckland offers great value stay. For its affordable price, you are in a great spot in downtown Auckland and the amenities are just enough to justify the price. If you’re looking to be in the heart of Auckland with a high end feel for a low price, this is a great option for you.
